Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Sunday 8 November 19:39:09 UTC 2015

I’m surprised to realize I haven’t mentioned Ann Leckie in any LH posts (though I have in comments); her novel Ancillary Justice is the best science fiction I’ve read in years, and it has an obvious linguistic hook, which I’ll let Alex Dally MacFarlane explain at the beginning of her very interesting and informative essay “Translating Gender: Ancillary Justice in … [Link]

From Doctor Science, posted in a LLOG comment due to email difficulties: I happened to be reading (parts of) Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation (Chambers, 1844) and I came across his discussion of language change and evolution. Chambers wrote: The able and self-devoted Robert Moffat, in his work on South Africa, states, without the least regard to hypothesis, … [Link]

Language Log » Japan's continuing love affair with the fax machine

Sunday 8 November 3:06:04 UTC 2015

Periodically, someone will write an article about how the Japanese still are inordinately fond of fax machines, such as this one by Michael Fitzpatrick from the BBC News "Technology of Fiction" section: "Why is hi-tech Japan using cassette tapes and faxes?" (11/3/15) Not a word about kanji. I asked about a dozen Japanese friends and colleagues why their compatriots still … [Link]
