This page is about writing in the sense of more-or-less professional writing of substantial amounts of text. So it is not concerned with language doubts (like when to use ‘it’s’ or ‘its’ or whether a singular collective noun can take a plural verb form – try the Language Stuff page if that’s what you’re interested in), or advertising copywriting, which is a subworld all of its own. These are my favourite writing and copywriting feeds, plus a couple for those looking for writing gigs:

Depression: My story and how journalists should speak up when they are feeling down

As … [Link]

Is My Garden Warning of a Fierce Winter to Come?
When we first moved to Maine, I read A Year in the Maine Woods by Bernd Heinrich…twice. That book helped me learn about the intricacies of nature's seasonal dances in Maine, which are far different from those in Texas. One of my favorite passages from Henrich's book is from August 14th: "The fields are daily coming more alive with crickets … [Link]
Amazon Ebooks Are NOT Outselling Paperbacks!
The publishing world was awash in seeming hysteria last week when Amazon issued yet another press release designed to promote the Kindle. The release stated: "Amazon.com customers now purchase more Kindle books than hardcover books…" Of course, those in the industry recognize that "hardcover" means just that – a hardcover / hardback book; not a paperback. When you look at … [Link]
Another Day, Another Cheapskate "Publisher" Looking for Free Labor
Angela, Thank you for your support of writers over the years, especially your most recent case of reading the riot act to the organization who didn't want to pay writers for their work, thinking that publishing it was good enough. Megaen Hong Kong [Link]

There's Only One Child Myth
What I'm pretty sure Time is talking about is "the only-child myth." A myth about only children, not the only myth about children. (If anyone cites "the '-ly' rule" as an excuse for this ridiculous refusal to hyphenate, I'm going to, in the words of a certain Holly Hunter character, lose it.) [Link]

There’s a scene in the animated series Futurama that cracks me up every time I think about it. The show’s characters are at the horse track of the future, but there’s controversy when a race ends very, very closely — so closely that the race officials need a powerful electron microscope to judge the “photo finish.” The track loudspeaker eventually … [Link]
