Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Language Log » OMG! American English

Friday 1 May 22:26:39 UTC 2015

The star of this popular Voice of America program is Jessica Beinecke (Bái Jié 白洁). Her Mandarin is quite amazing; indeed, I would say that it is nothing short of phenomenal. Here's a sample: The title of that particular video is "OMG! 美语 Pick-up Line Do's & Don'ts!" The Mandarin term in question that she is illustrating is dāshàn 搭讪, … [Link]

I am also happy to report that thanks to readers clicking on Google and Amazon ads and links, “that small amount of income has allowed me … [Link]

Language Log » Maps and charts of the world's languages

Friday 1 May 13:56:25 UTC 2015

A week ago on Thursday (4/23/15), the following article appeared in the Washington Post: "The world’s languages, in 7 maps and charts". These maps in the WP are thought-provoking and informative, but it is unfortunate that, like many other misguided sources, they lump all the Chinese languages (which they incorrectly call "dialects") into one. That's terribly misleading. This would be … [Link]

Wordorigins.org » A Tawdry Comic

Friday 1 May 12:22:00 UTC 2015

Dinosaur Comics is one of my favorites, often riffing on linguistic issues. Today we get a double bonus: etymology and Anglo-Saxon history. Here is the Big List entry on tawdry. [Discuss this post] [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » bridesmaid wasted

Friday 1 May 7:00:00 UTC 2015

The special kind of drunk you only get as a female member of a wedding party. The kind where you wake up the next day in a pretty dress, missing your shoes, smeared with someone else's lipstick and unable to remember how you made it home after a wedding or stagette. "Why do I feel so awful and whose panties … [Link]
