Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Tuesday 5 August 17:11:27 UTC 2014

While we're at it, here are two more contributions from Nathan Hopson in Japan: The Coca-Cola vending machine is interesting for the ad-speak neologism "ecoる," adding the verb ending to "eco" as in "ecology" to mean "to be environmentally friendly". This reminds me of how the English verb ending -ing has been taken up in Mandarin: "Once more on the … [Link]

Useful advice for specialists trying to write for the general public: My colleague Rachel Morello-Frosch, a professor of environmental … [Link]

Under the subject line "Things you never thought you'd get to say", Bob Ladd sent me this note yesterday: You are among the few people I know who will appreciate this anecdote: It's been unusually cool, wet, and windy in many parts of the Mediterranean this summer, including our part of Sardinia. On our last full day there last week, … [Link]

Language Log » No dawn for ape-language theory

Tuesday 5 August 14:44:31 UTC 2014

As you know, I serve Language Log as occasional film reviewer. I reported on Rise of the Planet of the Apes when it came out (see "Caesar and the power of No", August 14, 2011). So I naturally went to see the sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, to report on the way the franchise was developing its … [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » Gingerlicious

Tuesday 5 August 7:00:00 UTC 2014

Used to describe a (rarely seen) sexy, red-haired, freckled, pasty ginger. Gabe: Yuck! She's got a nasty case of gingervitus. Kari: You're such a gingerphobe – I think she's gingerlicious. [Link]
