Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Language Log » Duolingo Mandarin: a critique

Tuesday 21 November 23:06:09 UTC 2017

A friend sent this lifehacker article to me: "Mandarin Chinese Is Now Available on the Language Learning App Duolingo", by Patrick Allan (11/16/17) Duolingo claims that it "is the world's most popular way to learn a language. It's 100% free, fun and science-based. Practice online on duolingo.com or on the apps!" After reading Allan's article, I sent the following note … [Link]

I’m reading Зимние заметки о летних впечатлениях [Winter Notes on Summer Impressions], Dostoevsky’s delightfully acerbic account of his 1862 trip to Europe, with attacks on Western/socialist rationality (tell someone you’ll feed them and guarantee them work in exchange for a tiny drop of freedom, but “no, even that droplet is too heavy”), and I’ve reached the final chapter, which is … [Link]

Joe Davidson, "Foreign Service leadership being ‘decapitated’ and ‘depleted at a dizzying speed’", WaPo 11/17/2017: Using “I” 42 times in his 23-minute speech Wednesday, he declared “NATO, believe me, is very happy with Donald Trump and what I did,” as he touted previous accomplishments. Trump’s unmatched self-adulation might cloud his view of the hard work by foreign service staffers and … [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » cobra yawn

Tuesday 21 November 8:30:00 UTC 2017

The involuntary spraying of saliva while yawning. Much like the venom spray from a cobra. In most cases the yawner doesn't realized it has happened only finding the aftermath once the yawn is over. I just cobra yawned all over my keyboard five minutes prior to writing this definition. [Link]

Language Log » The curious case of "dillweed"

Tuesday 21 November 4:46:00 UTC 2017

On The Awl, Samantha Sanders has a wonderful piece on "Dillweed (As An Insult)." (This is part of The Awl's "holiday series on flavors and spices," naturally enough.) She muses on how dillweed has been used as a pejorative since it was popularized by the show "Beavis and Butt-Head" back in the early '90s and considers how this mild-mannered herb … [Link]

Tuesday 21 November 1:35:26 UTC 2017

The Rise and Fall of the English Sentence by Julie Sedivy is one of those long, meaty articles that make too many points to summarize briefly, so I’ll just quote a few bits and urge you to read the whole thing: Languages with very simple sentence structure are, for the most part, oral languages. It’s the languages that have a … [Link]
