Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

The following is a guest post by Tony Thorne of King's College London, originally appearing on his blog. Alice Roberts talking about the Celts in Peel, Isle of Man This week I am in the Isle of Man for the CeltFest, a festival of Manx and Celtic music and culture. There are lunchtime concerts every day at the Noa bakehouse in Douglas, and concerts and other events every night in Peel. Last night I went to a fascinating talk by Alice Roberts, an anatomist, anthropologist and broadcaster, about the … [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » net neutrality

Wednesday 12 July 7:30:00 UTC 2017

An idea whereby all access to the collective Internets is equal. Where no limits on different throughputs or access to services are placed. Senator Stevens on Net Neutrality: The internet is not something that you just dump something on… It's not a big truck, it's a series of tubes! You sir, are an idiot! [Link]

languagehat.com » Natufian Origin for Afroasiatic?

Wednesday 12 July 0:00:47 UTC 2017

Greg Pandatshang sent me this post by Razib Khan arguing for a Levantine (Natufian) origin for the Afroasiatic phylum on genetic grounds. Khan himself asks “Why would I have any particular insight?” and I’m inherently suspicious of attempts to link language and genetics, but it’s an interesting topic; Greg says he’d be curious to know what LH readers would make … [Link]
