Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Daniel Victor, “What Was Behind Those Befuddling McCain Questions?“, NYT 6/8/2017: Senator John McCain became an unexpected focus of befuddlement and concern on Thursday after a line of questioning that appeared to conflate two separate F.B.I. investigations during James Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Here’s the start of Senator McCain’s questions: Your browser does not support the audio … [Link]

The armadillo is an American mammal of the order Cingulata. There are a number of species of armadillo, of which the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is perhaps the most familiar to English speakers. That species is found in South and Central America and in the southeastern United States, as far west as Texas and as far north as Nebraska, and … [Link]

On Friday, at a joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Donald Trump begrudgingly took questions from Jon Karl of ABC News. Karl asked whether there are indeed recordings of Trump’s conversations with former FBI director James Comey, as Trump once suggested on Twitter. Here is how he replied (emphasis mine): KARL: And you seem to be hinting that … [Link]

This phrase describes the scenario of when you randomly smell something tasty cooking somewhere, and when you look around yourself to determine where the food is at you realise the only place for the smell to have come from was someones asshole. Jenny and james ate curry for dinner and the next night are watching a movie.James asks jenny if … [Link]

Saturday 10 June 2:39:56 UTC 2017

Not by a long shot, judging from several recent articles in the South China Morning Post: “American professor speaks up for Cantonese to preserve Hong Kong’s heritage: Robert Bauer from HKU is writing a Cantonese-English dictionary that will include colloquial terms, believing language represents cultures” (Heyling Chan, 5/21/17) “Hong Kong vloggers keeping Cantonese alive with money-spinning YouTube channels: While many … [Link]

Bathrobe sent me Isham Cook’s recent post Anglish and English: Why our language is 750 and not 1,500 years old; both the confrontational title and the fact that the page features a misspelled label “Miscellania” suggested crackpottery to me, but I thought I’d pass it along for discussion. The basic thesis is in this passage: The answer to the riddle … [Link]
