Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Language Log » Uninformed peeving reappears

Monday 26 December 23:07:59 UTC 2016

I was just about to write a post about how pundits seem to have given up on ignorant peeving about "new" usages that are actually decades or centuries old, when Victor Mair sent me a link to Alex Beam, "Words we can live without", Boston Globe 12/23/2016. And Mr. Beam is a worthy heir to the earlier pundits who were … [Link]

Language Log » Coffee and caffeine; laws and morals

Monday 26 December 15:14:52 UTC 2016

A Korean chain coffee shop, Caffe Bene, recently opened a branch at 38th and Chestnut in University City, Philadelphia. This is a design on one of the walls: Modeled after the motto of the University of Pennsylvania, "Leges sine moribus vanae" ("Laws without morals are useless"), "Caffeum sine coffeinum vanae" tells us that "Coffee without caffeine is useless". You may … [Link]

Omniglot blog » Boxing tips

Monday 26 December 12:22:40 UTC 2016

Today is Boxing Day in the UK, and there are a number of ideas about the origins of the name. The Oxford English Dictionary, for example, defines Boxing Day as: “the first week-day after Christmas-day, observed as a holiday on which post-men, errand-boys, and servants of various kinds expect to receive a Christmas-box” The earliest attested use of the term … [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » voluntold

Monday 26 December 3:05:43 UTC 2016

voluntold: The exact opposite of volunteering. Always used in reference to an unpleasant task to which you have been assigned by your boss. Example 1: Co-worker 1: I hear you got a transfer. Co-worker 2: Yeah. I didn't want to, but I was voluntold. Example 2: Co-worker 1: You want to go fishing Saturday??? Co-worker 2: I can't, I got … [Link]
