Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Language Log » Trevor Noah reflects on language and identity

Thursday 1 December 22:26:17 UTC 2016

In my introductory undergraduate course on English words, and in most undergraduate introductory courses on linguistics, students are invited to reflect on language and identity—how the way you speak communicates information about who you are—which they are typically very interested in. This isn't my beat, professionally speaking, but as a linguist I have a duty to help my students think … [Link]

Thursday 1 December 21:23:09 UTC 2016

Once again it’s time for the Year in Reading feature at The Millions, in which people write about books they’ve read and enjoyed during the previous year; my contribution is up, featuring my review of Aileen M. Kelly’s great biography of Herzen, The Discovery of Chance , as well as my other favorites of the year, including some I’ve discussed here … [Link]

Omniglot blog » Why is it I and not i?

ı ı I - an illustration of how the first person pronoun in English got stretched Have you ever wondered why the first person pronoun in English (I) is always written as a capital letter? I was asked about this the other day and though I would investigate. According to a blog post on Dictionary.com, it came about as a bit of an accident. In Old and Middle English the equivalent of I was ıc [iʧ], … [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » Trump Christian

Thursday 1 December 8:00:00 UTC 2016

A self-declared follower of the Christian faith and its principles of unconditional love, helping the less fortunate and renunciation of violence and worldly goods, who also rabidly supports President-elect Donald Trump, an unabashed narcissist, racist, misogynist, xenophobe and pussy grabbing real estate con-man of shiny, gaudy buildings. Billy Bob: I can't wait until Trump kicks all them Mexican and refugee … [Link]

Language Log » Chinese restaurant shorthand, part 2

Thursday 1 December 4:37:42 UTC 2016

On Saturday the 26th, Yixue Yang and I went to the Ting Wong Restaurant in Philadelphia's Chinatown. I took one look at the menu and knew right away that the first thing I wanted was the second item on the menu, the Congee with Chopped Beef. I love Hong Kong style congee (rice porridge or gruel). Long before I started … [Link]

Language Log » A new English word

Thursday 1 December 2:04:53 UTC 2016

Since I began the study of Chinese languages half a century ago, there's one word that I have found very useful and versatile, but extremely hard to translate into English, so in this post I'm going to propose that we might as well just simply (gāncuì 乾脆 = the previous five English words) borrow it into English and be done … [Link]

Forrest Gander has a wonderful account at Literary Hub of translating Neruda, starting by describing his reluctance to take on the task: “It’s not that I don’t love Neruda, but given the attention he’s justly received […] I’ve wanted to champion terrific lesser-known and more contemporary Latin American writers in translation.” I’ll leave you to discover most of the details … [Link]
