Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

To access an article in the Financial Times yesterday I found myself confronted with a short market-research survey about laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Answer three our four layers of click-the-box questions, and I could get free access to the article I wanted to look at. A reasonable bargain: clearly some company was prepared to pay the FT for access to … [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » comfort cartoon

Saturday 1 October 8:30:00 UTC 2016

Synonymous to comfort food, comfort cartoon provides feelings of nostalgia and sentimentality towards the viewers. The type of animation tends to be stylized and visually appealing: over or under saturation of colours, "incorrect" motion etc. The storylines tend to be rich with lessons and underlying meanings (nutrients) or sometimes it's just for pure fun and joy (carbs).Popular examples would be: … [Link]
