Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Eric at XIX век has finished translating Старик/“The Old Man” (first installment, last) and revealed the author; now he’s got questions about details of the translation. Previously he asked about repetition (a topic on which I had strong ideas); now he’s got a most interesting lexical/cultural problem: what exactly is a лиф [lif]? It’s some part of the upper garment … [Link]

Language Log » Degemination

Monday 1 August 11:52:35 UTC 2016

If you think about it, "home made" is pronounced the same way as "homade" would be if it was a word: And maybe "homade" *is* a word? [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » Let my girls hang

Monday 1 August 7:00:00 UTC 2016

The act of taking your bra off after a long day and letting them be free. I can't wait to get home from work and let my girls hang [Link]
