Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

Language Log » How low can they go?

Tuesday 26 July 23:04:08 UTC 2016

And what would it sound like? Patricia Murphy, "Hillary Campaign Plans to Shush Berniacs During Vote", The Daily Beast 7/26/2016: In an email to Clinton's California Delegation, a Clinton staffer outlined a plan to drown out any sounds of descent from unruly Bernie fans. The error has now been fixed — I'm sympathetic, since I make substitutions of that kind … [Link]

Language Log » Spamferences thrive; junk journals prosper

Tuesday 26 July 20:28:48 UTC 2016

I was recently moved (screaming and struggling, as four strong men held me down by my arms and legs) to a new web-based university email system designed and run by Microsoft: Office 365. Naturally, it's ill-designed slow-loading crap, burdened by misfeatures and pointless pop-ups that I do not want popping up, and it fails to allow various elementary operations that … [Link]

Language Log » Japan: crazy over portmanteaux

Tuesday 26 July 15:37:10 UTC 2016

No matter where I go these days, I hear young people shouting to their friends, "I'm playing Pokémon Go", which they pronounce "pokey-mon go". It would be an understatement to say that, for the past few weeks, Pokémon Go has been a veritable craze. Yet most people who play the game probably do not realize that the name "Pokémon" is … [Link]

Omniglot blog » Book hunting in Montreal

Tuesday 26 July 15:10:53 UTC 2016

Yesterday I spent the morning hunting for interesting language books with Lindsay Dow, of Lindsay Does Languages, Benny Lewis, of Fluent in 3 months, Steve Kaufmann, of lingq, and Josh Koehn from California. The first book shop we went to had a good selection of books in and about a wide variety of languages, including Old Irish, Middle Welsh, Breton … [Link]

languagehat.com » Tom Wolfe vs. Chomsky.

Tuesday 26 July 12:32:41 UTC 2016

I will stipulate up front that Tom Wolfe’s mannerisms can be annoying (especially if you read more than one of his books) and that no matter how much research he’s done, his view of linguistics is inevitably an outsider’s and will contain errors. Still, I was delighted to read Victor Mair’s Log post about Wolfe’s cover article in the August … [Link]

Urban Word of the Day » Poképace

Tuesday 26 July 7:00:00 UTC 2016

The zombie like foot speed of Pokémon GO player's. You can tell they're all playing Pokémon GO based on their trademark Poképace. If it usually takes 15 minutes to walk there, it'll take Ramon 30 to 45 based on his Poképace. [Link]
