Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

The 7000 Languages Project involves creating Langscape, an online portal for learning about languages worldwide, that combines an interactive language map … [Link]

Language Log » Multiple

Friday 19 December 15:20:08 UTC 2014

John F. Banzhaf III writes to complain about overuse of "multiple": Over the past six months I have heard an ever-growing number of TV news anchors, reporters, and talking heads on television use the word "multiple" where "many" – a shorter and less pretentious word – would do as well, if not better. I would suggest that your remind people … [Link]

There’s a new blog in town, one aimed at “language geeks to talk about things they can’t talk about in more polite contexts.” Specifically, the blog Strong Language is all about vulgarities. Strong Language is the brainchild of linguist James Harbeck and editor Stan Carey, who each have their own excellent language blogs. The blog also features contributions from other … [Link]

A current cause célèbre in China concerns a letter that was supposedly written by a little boy to the President of China, Xi Jinping: "‘Not as skinny as Obama, like Putin is okay.’ China censors schoolboy’s suggestion that Xi lose weight" (12/18/14) "A 9-year-old told China’s president to lose some weight—and censors shut him down" (12/18/14) Here's the letter, first … [Link]

Friday 19 December 3:44:38 UTC 2014

Last night's "Mystery Language" post has gotten 43 interesting and insightful comments. The answer, revealed by Doug Marmion, of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies: The ‘mystery language' audio file was provided by Arnaud Delorme, a neuroscientist who works at the Institute for Neural Computation (INC) in San Diego. Arnaud has been working with a woman … [Link]

I’m happy to announce the appearance of Strong Language, a new group blog about swearing created by linguist James Harbeck and Stan Carey of Sentence first, one of my favorite language sites. The About page says, “This blog gives a place for professional language geeks to talk about things they can’t talk about in more polite contexts. It’s a sweary … [Link]
