Language Stuff

Almost everyone uses language, so inevitably almost everyone thinks they are an expert in it. I don’t consider myself an expert, though most of my work requires at least language competence and sometimes actual skill, but I do follow the blogs featured on this feeds page.

(If you are wondering where the translation-related feeds have all gone, I have put them on their own page.)

Most of the blogs represented here are in English, most of the time, but don’t be surprised to find other languages used. Go with the flow – I occasionally find myself pleasantly surprised at how much I can grasp in languages I have never seen before.

A banner ad from Toyota would not … [Link]

This was the result of the latest malfunction in the sitemeter.com tool for counting visits and referrals, which we've been using for the past decade. Increasingly often over the past year or so, the sitemeter tracking code … [Link]

Someone who simply has no clue what they're doing in life. They have no common sense, and ask stupid questions, such as "how do I do laundry" or "what is online banking" Person 1: I can't put my keys in the lock, it's not working!!! Person 2: Maybe you should just turn it the other way? Person 2: You know … [Link]

Another amazing gift of the internet: Old Chinese: A New Reconstruction , by William H. Baxter and Laurent Sagart, costs over $60, but you can download its Old Chinese reconstructions for free here. Via Matt at No-sword, who quotes this entertaining footnote: We adopt the term “Kra-Dai” proposed by Ostapirat (2000) in place of the traditional “Tai-Kadai,” since to Thai speakers, … [Link]
